HISE Glossary

TermDefinition
account

A group of scientific collaborators guided by an agreement that outlines the legal obligations of those who access or analyze HISE data.

assetA content component of a study, publication, or Data App, such as a visualization, file, file set, or IDE. For a publication or Data App, the study itself can be an asset.
Certificate of Reproducibility (CertPro)A detailed, step-by-step record of scientific research that includes data, scientific algorithms, computational environment, tools stack, and results, generated in real time to foster reproducibility of results.
cohort

A subject metadata field in HISE Advanced Search representing a specified group of subjects who share a particular categorization (for example, treatment arm or control group).

Collaboration SpaceThe HISE Collaboration Space has access controls that let you work with other scientists to manage file setsprepare reports, publish studies, coordinate work on publications, and read or contribute to selected other documents and presentations.
computer processing units (CPU)Processing time (sec) in a running IDE instance.
Data Apps

Dynamic platform that showcases the data and computational resources in HISE, helps scientists explore AIFI research, awards Certificates of Reproducibility, and packages assets in a custom-designed UI.

data-disk storageAmount of provisioned space (GB) in an IDE, even if the storage is unused or the instance is stopped.
Django UICustom interface for presentation of Data Apps assets.
Explore portal

An executable environment for presentation and storage of Data Apps. Portal visitors can browse available publications, view certificates of reproducibility, view visualizations, or access the data sets associated with each publication. The portal is accessed at

fileA stored digital data object in HISE, such as a processed result, raw dataset, or derived output, identified by a file name, file ID, or file version.
file set

A collection of selected files that users want to use again or share with others.

filter

A single searchable metadata field plus a chosen operator and value (for example, Disease State equals “Healthy control”) used to narrow Advanced Search results.

filter group

A logical collection of related filters shown together in the HISE Advanced Search UI. Examples include Sample Metadata, File Metadata, Subject Metadata, User Tags, Custom Metadata, Survey Metadata, EMR Data, and EMR Metadata.

filter operatorSee operator.
hero imageA relatively large, eye-catching image whose purpose is to attract visitors' attention and capture or represent the content of the page or element with which the image is associated.
materialized viewA database object that stores query results as a physical table for quick retrieval. Unlike a standard view, in which the query is run every time you access it, a materialized view stores precomputed data that appears (materializes) quickly, speeding data retrieval for complex queries or aggregations that would otherwise be slow to compute on demand.
memoryAmount of memory allocated to a running IDE instance (GB/sec).
metadata

Structured descriptive fields attached to files, samples, subjects, or EMR records that capture properties such as batch, specimen type, disease state, cohort, and GUIDs. These fields are used as filters in HISE Advanced Search.

notebookRefers to a Jupyter notebook, an open-source web app that lets data analysts create and share documents and code.
operator

The comparison rule applied to a filter’s value, such as equals, does not equal, is one of, is none of, contains term, is between, or is outside, which determines how records are matched or excluded.

project

An organizing entity that enables cloud services (such as APIs, authentication, and billing) by housing the settings, permissions, and other metadata for applications built on the selected cloud platform.

publication

A complete work that explores a particular scientific question. It'a composed of a report and any accompanying assets, such as file sets, notebooks, visualizations, and a certificate of reproducibility (CertPro).

query

A configured Advanced Search request that combines a chosen scope (files, samples, or subjects), a selected project or projects, optional file types, and one or more metadata filters to return a specific result set.

quotaThe maximum amount (in USD) an individual or organization is allowed to spend on cloud computing or other services; a spending cap.
report

One instance of a document or presentation in a Google Workspace. A report can be formatted as a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide, or a Microsoft Word doc or PowerPoint slide.

sample

A single biological specimen or aliquot (for example, a blood draw) represented in HISE by specimen-level attributes such as batch ID, panel ID, specimen type, and visit.

spendAmount of money (in USD) spent on a particular product or service, such as cloud computing.
study

A workspace for joint research within a HISE project. Depending on your needs, a project can house one or more studies. A study can contain reports, visualizations, file sets, and notebooks, a certificate of reproducibility (CertPro), and uploaded files, such as PDFs and images.

subject

An individual study participant whose subject-level metadata, such as cohort, sex, birth year, age at enrollment, ethnicity, race, and subject ID, is stored in HISE.

visualization

A visualization can be a metadata visualization saved from an advanced search in HISE or a custom visualization generated by an analyst in the IDE.
